The course is delivered by Kevin Guthrie, a professional musician, guitar teacher and drum teacher. Kevin has been playing drums for 35 years. He has experience playing in many genres, including jazz, rock, folk and orchestral music. He has backed acclaimed jazz musicians, including Annie Ross, Joe Temperley and Colin Steele. Kevin also has vast experience of playing in orchestras for shows and of touring/recording. After teaching privately for almost three decades and co-founding an award-winning music education business in Scotland, Kevin is ideally placed to pass on his wealth of experience to new players.

In the first part of the course, students will learn the parts of a drum kit and how each drum and cymbal works together. You’ll also be shown the correct way to hold your drumsticks, helping you play comfortably and build good habits.

Next, we’ll dive into the heart of drumming. Students will learn basic rhythms and beats, along with simple drum fills that can be added to each of the beats. Within just a few weeks, you’ll also begin to improvise and create your own drum patterns, building confidence and musical creativity.

To strengthen technique and coordination, the course includes an introduction to basic drum rudiments, which are the building blocks used by drummers all over the world.
